We saw a turtle... yahoo!!!!

Yes... that's how awesome my weekend was. Unfortunately we took the turtle's picture on Kate's cell phone and we lost the charge before she cold email it to me, so any photo illustration will have to wait.

We saw the turtle Sunday on the Brunswick/Bath ME bike/walking trail along the Androscoggin & Rt 1. It was a decent sized snapping turtle and had just crawled out of a nice hole on an embankment.

My Mother, Kate and I went for a nice stroll. My mother's birthday was earlier in the week and I was up to celebrate.

The night before Kate and I went to go see "Up" which was fantastic fun. There is this cool bird called Kevin, and a talking golden retriever named "Doug" amongst many other great items that make the movie a winner. After the movie Kate and I stopped at Walgreens and got a box of chocolate ice cream, fresh from Holland.

I know... pretty cool, right?

Follow up to Yesterday's post

Tim Hayes sent me this article:
The 'Empathy' Nominee

I felt the need to include it because my argument yesterday was that attacking Sotomayor and Obama is a mistake for the GOP. The article is nicely done, and in a perfect world, one we obviously do not live in, the advice suggested below would be a simple and easy path for the Republicans to follow.

See excerpt:

"As the first nominee of a popular President and with 59 Democrats in the Senate, Judge Sotomayor is likely to be confirmed barring some major blunder. But Republicans can use the process as a teaching moment, not to tear down Ms. Sotomayor on personal issues the way the left tried with Justices Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito, but to educate Americans about the proper role of the judiciary and to explore whether Judge Sotomayor's Constitutional principles are as free-form as they seem from her record."

But alas, it is not a perfect world:
Gingrich: Sotomayor 'racist,' should withdraw nomination

Gingrich, sadly is typically the best of the lot when it comes to the GOP, but I suppose this and his recent caving on the uselessness of TARP, both are fine examples of human imperfection. Read through the comments after the Gingrich article... mind you CNN readers probably lean left, but I think the response, preconceptions exhibited of the GOP, and simply the anger and indignation of the readers, not towards Sotomayor.... but towards him shows what a major blunder that the conservative handling of this issue has become. Even barring some remote chance that Sotomayor is not approved, the taste of an intolerant, if not down right childish response by many Republicans will be what average people take away from this.

The Democrats have mastered the art of letting the GOP destroy themselves.

I will however point out that the "Clarence Thomas" example described above in this right leaning editorial, is a fine example of a loyalist's inability to take off their rose colored glasses. Levying personal attacks is politics 101 and there is plenty of it going around. And lets not kid ourselves, these attacks need to be on the table. However, there is political backlash against an ill conceived attack with little potential for support from the masses. In the provided examples: It is easier to get the public to turn against someone who may have been dishing out sexual harassment, than it is to paint a proud Latina woman into a racist, because she may have been lazy with her words in expressing pride in her heritage. The latter argument has "poor sport" written all over. People want to support the underdog, and Sotomayor is just that. Attacks such as the one currently being administered by Gingrich only serve to enhance that standing.

I know it isn't as glamorous, but as suggested in the article, the GOP needs to try and stick to policy instead of trying to create momentum for the tough-to-stomach concept of reverse racism, relevant as it might be.

The Dense GOP

Can someone please start a viable third party for people who favor small government, personal freedoms, and fiscal responsibility?

Please?

The GOP should have an opportunity to regroup and redefine themselves, and instead they are heading in a direction that is really going to firmly establish them as a fringe party, and sadly there is no group to take its place. I really don't want to live in a one party country, especially when that party supports government control of pretty much every aspect of existence.

How are they self destructing?

Do you really need to ask?

Lets see, opposing this new Supreme Court Justice, pretty much for the sake of opposing her. Lets face it. ANYONE Obama appointed, short of a popular politician who happens to be a Republican Evangelical Lawyer (There aren't many) they would try to say they were radically left wing. Truth be told... both sides really want a judge that rules ideologically from their political wing... so there will never be compromise there. I hate this political B.S. especially because this is a lose lose situation for the party that more closely aligns itself with my ideological beliefs.

These social issues that the GOP insists upon attempting to insert into law hurt them with an increasingly secular and diverse Nation. They are pigeonholing themselves. They had the bible belt advantage in recent times, however those days are over, ESPECIALLY when so many people are struggling to hold on to their homes and bring home the bacon. We have bigger fish to fry so to speak. This talk about whether Sotomayor will support left wing rulings is robbing us as voters. Instead of focusing on our economy they are bickering about issues that at the end of the day won't matter if we are all in the poor house.

OK while I'd like to just move on and say they should appoint Sotomayor, and I think while they should, the GOP is not going to allow smooth passage.... and the damage of this choice WILL BE LASTING. Anyone who apposes this nod from a state with a sizable Hispanic population WILL get a new stigma attached to them in the next election.

This woman's story is spectacular, she came from humble roots, and she is an inspiration to Latin Americans. Evidence shows that she is a competent and successful judge. The media is making her out to be a hero, and she appears to be a captivating person, much in the same way that Obama is. Attacking her, and criticizing Obama for appointing her will backfire. Of course some of the folks leading the battle cry are the arrogant, and often hateful Laura Ingraham, the usually batty and occasionally antisemitic Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh (link is Rush's damage control) who liked to publicise a racially tinged "Barack the Magic Negro" parody, Hannity who tends to be a lemming for the every thing right-winged, and yes the lovely Mitt Romney who tried to race bait against Hispanics during the main election over illegal immigration (hypocritically since he employed them). The real joke is one of the things they are accusing Sotomayor of is being racist, which is essentially the pot calling the kettle black (Rush's reverse racism claims).

Say what you will about leader of the GOP's Michael Steele, but he gets that this is going to be a problem for them. Steele: GOP must be careful on Sotomayor

Sotomayor obviously made a very questionable statement with "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Liberal outlets are trying to spin it as misinterpreted, although what is said is pretty straight forward.... she is implying that her race will better suit her to make judgement over minorities, which actually is supposed to be something that should not influence her as a federal judge (Think back to criticism of John Robert's Christian beliefs on the flip side). The liberal spin is that she is saying she'd be better on a specific issue.... so maybe I'm smoking crack here... how is that not saying she'd be a better judge than a white man? What if a white man said the opposite.... lets say "Since issues the Supreme court sees involve white people, namely white men, I'd be better suited for the job than a Hispanic woman"... any guy who said that would not be able to go out in public again, let alone get the position. But honestly is it the same? We all know it isn't exactly, because we know there are social preconceptions about Hispanics that are tougher to overcome, at least when it comes to achieving a position of power. So while what Sotomayor said was wrong both for an individual and an officiator of the law to say, the stigma attached to saying it just isn't there. Telling people Sotomayor is a racist is a tough sell, because everyone, even the accusers know (even if they won't say it) that she is speaking from pride of overcoming insecurity and pride of her culture, rather than an assertion that she is really better than a white man. Well that's sort of the difference.......

The other piece of controversy is that she was involved with a famous New Haven Connecticut case of reverse discrimination where a couple of white men who did better on a firemen exam, were passed over for promotions in favor of minority employees who did not perform as well. The trouble with the ties asserted by the Angry Right-Wing is that apparently she did not make the ruling but rather was in a panel observing decisions of other judges, in which it is not customary to over-ride the opinions of other judges. Whether or not this implies she was implicit in not making a decision to favor the minorities is something that perhaps is not clear. I doubt this will change her appointment short of the Supreme Court over turning this decision, which has a slight chance of happening before Congress votes on Sotomayors appointment to the high court.

Other evidence shows that Sotomayor actually has a diverse set of rulings and opinions that even in one circumstance supported pro-life initiatives. "In 2002, she wrote an opinion ruling against an abortion rights group that had challenged a government policy prohibiting foreign organizations receiving U.S. funds from performing or supporting abortions." This is in direct conflict with the picture that the Antagonists are trying to spew forth.

I just wish the Right would pick their battles. They need to realize that these arguments do not rally the right as some claim, but rather they continue to damage them.

When the GOP threw out the Contract with America and adopted the Hastert/Delay social conservatism that aligns itself more with the Democrat party of the late 50s and early 60s than it does the libertarian roots of the GOP, it set itself of this path to self destruct. This election should have taught them that, and instead they are fighting amongst themselves and the only unity is a chunk of the party that thinks they need to be even more socially conservative despite the clear minority of the population that believes these issues are a priority.

Further by attacking moderates such as Colin Powell and even John McCain, the GOP is making sure that their ranks do not grow, and that Independents will continue to align themselves more closely with the Democrats in coming elections. While some may not agree with Colin Powell's policy views for the most part, THAT, is what should be discussed, not whether or not Powell is Republican enough.

While I frequently criticize Nancy Pelosi, she understood that to win a majority she needed conservative democrats from conservative states to win. The GOP should learn from this but they are too thick headed, and yes.... allowing a hot headed radio host who is an ENTERTAINER to dictate the direction of the party, is pretty brainless in my opinion.

Yech... Tuesday

Today was my stand-in Monday after all, so it deserves a little bit of scorn.

Tonight I watched "Noise", a film starring Tim Robbins about a man driven to be a vigilante who punishes the owners or erratic car alarms. I really enjoyed this movie. Really.

It spoke to that anger that I admit I am prone to possessing, the irritation over the complete indifference people have towards one another.

Of course I would never smash car windows in, or even let the air out of the tires.... but I would dream about figuring out a way to putting a stop to it. I personally have called the cops, although like it is mentioned in the movie.... that is pretty useless. (There is a Nissan Altima that parks in the commuter rail lot next to me over some weekends, and a BMW SUV in the neighboring complex lot... both of which have overly sensitive if not broken alarms) It is beyond me why police won't write up citations for these people when they'll pull you over for having a pin hole in your muffler or for being in a slight hurry. I mean the alarm is pretty much intentional, blatant disregard for people, if you know about the problem and have not taken effort to fix it. They need to fine, especially in these times when city coffers are running low, it would be an excellent revenue source.

Anyway... it is on Netflix "Watch Instant" If you want to find joy in someone destroying cars I highly recommend it. It is a good old fantasy film through and through.

One more reason to like Sir McCartney

From the following gossip clip: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30932161/#storyContinued

Paul McCartney angry about digital TV: The recession has hit even celebrity wallets but Paul McCartney, who has a reputation for being overly frugal even in good economic climates, is taking things a bit far according to a source who knows him well.
“He’s furious over this switch to digital cable. He doesn’t think it’s right that you have to either go to the trouble of getting an adapter or you have to buy a new TV, which he should do anyway,” said the source. “You’d think he’d have an apartment full of flat screen TVs but really, he’s got these old clunky sets in this tiny New York apartment.”

Memorial Day Weekend

Kate and I had a great Memorial day weekend, and of course I'm sad to realize that it is over. Friday I rode my new bike (I bought a new hybrid bike) into work which was spectacular. I'm looking forward to biking frequently throughout the summer. My friend from college Jess Wheeler surprised me on Wednesday mentioning that he'd be in town. On Friday night Jess, his friend Carly, Kate, and myself went out to the Sunset Grill. We had a nice meal and a couple of drinks and a lot of good conversation.

(Pictures: Memorial day parade, I believe this group of veterans hailed from Waltham- the three older gentlemen you see sitting across the street were heckling every one who came by, and yes they were drinking something out of red plastic cups, fruit punch I'm sure. Next: me with iced coffee...don't look at my leg too long, it may burn out your retinas, and last, Kate waiting for the parade.)
Saturday of course was my usual days of errands. Kate came over in the evening and I had prepared some BBQ chicken, Italian pasta salad, and corn on the cob per request. We are starting to get the good corn on the cob in the grocery store, a sure sign of summer.

Sunday Kate had suggested that we go watch the Memorial day parade in Somerville which is apparently the largest in Massachusetts. It was pretty long. Aside from the sky looking as though it might threaten us with a thunderstorm, the weather was gorgeous. We walked from Davis Square to Inman Square via Highland Avenue and some back roads.

It was a great walk, and we even took the time to explore the Somerville West End public library which is celebrating its 100th year anniversary. It is a great building with a beautiful interior, despite some obvious modifications that probably occurred in the late 70s early 80s (orange bookshelves and decor accents).
In Inman square we went to the All Star Sandwich Bar, and they made up possibly one of the best burgers I've had in Boston. Kate had a BLT and it looked spectacular. And the fries.... don't even get me started about the fries. Mmmmmm MMMMM!!!! If you live in or near Boston and you haven't been, you had better go. It is right next to Christina's Ice Cream and spice shop too so if you can manage to save room for desert (this time Kate and I did not) check it out.

On Monday Kate and I went out to eat at Zalek's Roast Beef and Seafood, which is a little sandwich shop in Wakefield, in the vein of Kelly's Roast Beef or Liberty Bell. The great thing about Zalek's, aside from decent food at good prices was the patio with umbrella tables to eat at. After a nice meal in the great weather, we played several games of tennis and followed it up with a nice walk at the Breakheart Reservation. There were people swimming in the pond, and actually the water wasn't too cold. We had initially planned on going for a bike ride, but never got around to it. They'll be plenty of chances this summer and fall to go again and again!

Happy Unofficial Start to Summer Everyone!!

Credit where Credit is due

I admit most of what I have to say about Barack Obama typically can be filed under criticism, however, I was surprised by what seems to be a well thought out plan to reduce automotive oil consumption. Initially reports had been that Obama had planned to increase the mpg average to 40 mpg by the year 2016. Since trucks remain the most popular vehicle in much of this country, and are so for reasons of utility, a draconian increase such as this would be devastating to small businesses and people that rely on these vehicles. The plan leaked today, and to be formerly announced tomorrow sets a more modest truck mpg average of 30. While still high by today's standards, it seems like a reasonable goal.

Global warming aside.... because lets face it, regardless of our understanding of this issue, we can not undo the release of hundreds of thousands of years worth of CO2 back into the atmosphere. No one knows the measure of the impact of this because of pre-existing warming trends occurring outside of our influence. But short of polluting-to-control-warming by releasing particulate into the air to block out the sun, we are not going to reverse this trend. It is a political ploy by the left to damage big business and support carbon trading businesses and initiatives which are nothing less than scams.

The need for measures such as the current one being discussed, are all about preserving our oil, and reducing dependency on rogue nations. We shouldn't be buying any oil from Nations such as Venezuela who actively seek to damage our country. I would say they also spread an ideology that is averse to ours, but that unfortunately is perhaps no longer the case. Regardless, the reasons to reduce the consumption of oil are many. It is a limited resource which is facing increased demand as the East becomes industrialized. The world is becoming less stable, and oil will be the "gold" has been, and will continue to cause conflict.

We must take action to kick this addiction.

Facebook scam: FYI

I actually was a recipient of one of these messages this morning but I thought it looked fishy (no pun intended) so I did not follow the link.

Facebook phishing attack sought passwords

"One version of the e-mail went like this: "Richard sent you a message. Subject: Hello. "Check 121.im" with "121.im" as a Web link and fake Facebook page."

The above description is actually what I received, and it uses an actual friend's name in place of "Richard"- pretty clever.

I didn't see this coming a mile away.....

MBTA union files grievance over tough new cellphone policy

From article: The union that represents MBTA subway, bus, and trolley operators filed a grievance today against the transit agency's stringent new cellphone policy, which forbids operators from even carrying phones into a vehicle while on duty.
The union sent a letter to the agency saying that the new policy, which would fire employees caught using a cellphone and suspend them 10 days for even carrying one aboard, demonstrates "a poverty of leadership."

Poverty of leadership? Poverty of leadership!!! If there is any poverty of leadership it is the MBTA not making this policy a year ago when the first train collision occurred because of someone on the phone. No, they waited for it to happen again.

Talk about calling the kettle black. A poverty of leadership.... man... Any organization that would fight for such a trivial luxury that is proven to endanger lives is down right despicable. The MBTA is an incompetent organization, and the source of this incompetence is largely because these union members are untouchable. There can be laziness and total disregard for the job at hand and because the Unions will fight for everyone in court, short of that person nearly killing someone or blatantly stealing... the MBTA's hands are tied. This is why mass transit can't turn a profit, it is why trains are constantly late, it is why the employees are frequently rude and crude, and it is why this atrocity happened not once, but twice. People have NO responsibility, and no decency. They are selfish, foolish, entitled people who think that society owes them a decent life.

Politicians should legislate this, because the Unions will probably win this battle, and then it will just happen again. But you know what? They won't legislate it, BECAUSE most politicians in Massachusetts are Democrats, and Democrats are in bed with the Unions. Besides if the Unions actually lose, I can see the ACLU taking this up soon after.

There was a time when people might actually have the common sense not to put a couple hundred lives at stake so they could write a note to their significant other (which they'll probably see in an hour or two anyway). I bet you ANYTHING that dip sh*t who did this tried coming up with reasons why they weren't to blame.

Labor Unions in this regulated day & age are unnecessary. Making this particular union even more ridiculous is the fact that they are GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES. Having a union in the government is a conflict of interest, especially since Unions are biased political organizations. Employees of the government should be looked out for by the people, and NO organization should trump our power as voters to control the services that our tax money provides.

Unfortunately the tide is shifting and if the left has their way, Unions will expand into unprecedented areas of employment..... Because apparently the stimulus package and government spending aren't going to cause inflation to rise fast enough with out a bit of extra help.

Steak, Pasta, Corn on the Cob, and Salad

Kate made a lovely supper this evening, and to top it off we even headed into the city to get some Ben & Jerry's and have a pleasant conversation in "The Pru" food court before calling it a night. Till Friday.

By the way, thanks Barack. Thanks for coming to your senses.

Obama reverses course on alleged prison abuse photos

Aside from whether the policies on torture were just... why he ever thought releasing additional photos and top secret files on the subject would be a "good thing" is beyond me. It is really counterproductive when he is trying to improve our perception across the globe. And now that he has changed his mind not once, but twice, he is not coming off like too much of a leader, but I suppose when you are a rock star none of that matters.

And while I take the side of Obama, McCain, and yes even Newt Gingrich that the Bush administration perhaps went too far in their interrogations, the notion that what happened is worthy of being a "war crime" is absurd. Water boarding and likely other techniques were wrong, lets not allow it to happen again, but trying to make a political fiasco out of this is bad for everyone. Besides, Obama is indiscriminately signing off on bombing campaigns in Afghanistan which are resulting in many civilian casualties. If dunking someones head under water is a criminal action, than what do the bombing campaigns amount to? I think that the take home message is that War sucks, and if you plan on winning the battle, some of the tasks that need to be done are going to be rather unpleasant.

Many pundits have been trying to decide if Obama would be closer to Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter. Well at this point in the game I think his ties to a certain peanut farmer are significantly out weighing similarities to the philandering good ole boy.

links to deficit news

Couple of articles

If we are going to continue to play the inheritance game as Barack insists, here's something to ponder:

Our current scenario the second fiscal budget of the democrat majority:

I'm Back!!!

And by I'm back, what I really mean is my PC is back, with a new motherboard and all of its working parts, circuits, etc in order! And what this means is perhaps, just maybe I can make up for lost time.

First off, Kate and I had a fantastic weekend. We caught the new Star Trek movie on Saturday night and it was excellent. I had been looking forward to it. I had that same giddy feeling of excitement and anticipation that I used to feel when a classic Spielberg or Star Wars or Star Trek film came out when I was a child. This movie completely lived up to that. It is going to breathe new life into this franchise for certain and perhaps create a whole new generation of Trekkies. They may even potentially make one of me yet, if they can continue to put out stuff like this.

Sunday Kate and I had a nice lunch at the 99 grill, and then spent the afternoon playing some tennis. For a couple of amateurs I think we did pretty good. We didn't hit the ball out of the court once ;)

Tonight after dropping Kate off I picked up some Tandori Chicken and Naan from a new Indian restaurant near by. The Kabab Corner was excellent, and apparently it is run by the same people who own "India Castle" and "Desi Dhaba" in Cambridge. The latter of which I've been to a couple of times. Any way, I'm becoming more and more of a fan of Indian food, so I can definitely see my self becoming a regular. They have a very affordable lunch buffet that runs through the weekend... so I'll probably definitely make use of that!

Other up dates.... Last Thursday Mike Caprio and I caught a great Red Sox game at Fenway, where the team scored a mind boggling 12 runs in the 6th inning. Cleveland did not know what hit them.

At the time I joked with Caprio that I would have to post 6 or 7 entries over the weekend, or perhaps he demanded that.... I can't remember either way. While I have definitely fallen short of those lofty aspiration, I do promise I will make the point to really get on top of this. Even if my day happens to be dull, there is a lot in this world that can be written about, and much that can be and should be discussed.

Till then....

Warning Signs

That you may be losing touch with reality.....

Michelle Obama Wears $540 Designer Sneakers to Feed the Poor

I think this calls for a law limiting excessive spending on shoes for the good of society... or perhaps there should be a 90% shoe tax? Just some ideas, I thought we could perhaps redistribute the money to ten-year-olds since they don't pay taxes and statistically are below the poverty line if you exclude the income of their families.

Clearly Mrs. Obama's hedonism warrants restraint in these times of strife. Regulations should be put in place to reign in such deviant behavior. And flaunting it in front of the poor.... sounds like a hate crime to me.

(clearly I'm being sarcastic.... at least I hope it is clear)

Seriously.... those glorified converse all stars she's wearing... about 5 times more coin than what I would consider to be an expensive dress shoe. Really it is a waste. But I think it is her prerogative to do that if she wants to. Obama's politics however, really don't seem to jive with that. But then again, those who worked daily behind the Kremlin walls always lived much better than the comrades that made up the masses of Mother Russia.

I miss my PC

I'm anxiously awaiting a call from Staples, so that I may go pick up my computer with its new motherboard installed. I miss the blogging, and I'm anxious to get back to it. I've sat in my apartment countless times wanting to look something up on Wikipedia or google something that I saw on TV, only to soon realize that the spot once occupied by the old Dell is vacant, collecting dust.

Well I am reading more if nothing else.

I seem to be having a bad stretch with machines. I hit a pot hole in the car and rattled something lose. I thought for sure that I busted a CV joint or a strut because it was squealing miserably as it drove. It was as though the Focus had come down with swine flu. But I brought it to the shop this morning and they didn't find any damage. They did the alignment and rotated the tires, and mysteriously the car is no longer complaining.

Well, time for bed.

Have a happy weekend!
