Day 5 Begins

Happy Donut, what a way to start out our morning. We walked north up Van Ness St. to pick up a bus towards Telegraph Hill & Coit Tower and along the way we stumbled upon this gem. We picked up a coffee and a donut to share, which were quite satisfying. It appeared to be a family run venture, although we did come across other "Happy Donut" locations in San Francisco.

Coit Tower, another San Francisco landmark beckoned to us to be climbed as we ascended Telegraph Hill from Washington Square in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco.

Here is a look downhill towards Saint Peter & Paul's adjacent to Washington Square.

Coit Tower cost $5 to get to the top however, we felt this was something we needed to do. The inside of the tower is very retro which seemed to fit its Art Deco architecture. It is operated by a Chinese family. An old Chinese woman took us up in the elevator which was one of the old fashioned manually operated ones complete with a metal black retracting gate. Each time the elevator stopped it was uneven with the floor we were going to. The woman always warned us of the step, however her English was poor. The inside of the elevator was plastered with information on the tower so she didn't have to talk. Additionally displayed were many post cards and posters that were available for purchase downstairs. There are some murals in the base of the tower, historical because they were commissioned as part of the New Deal (The first stimulus- also somewhat unsuccessful in achieving economic recovery).

This picture is slightly out of order. I took this from the top of Pioneer park where the tower is located. Below are several pictures from the top of the tower.

Tomorrow I'll continue with our descent down the back side of Telegraph Hill.
